Hello from Aichi Ken

Its Carl again from Komaki. I have been keeping my own blog and podcast at http://90daysinjapan.blogspot.com/ so I haven't been writing here. Last week I got to go to the demo factory in Shiga for daifuku. It was amazing to see all the different automatic warehousing machines. It will help me understand what I am translating. Up until today I have been working on a 65 manual and learning to use Wordfast the translation program. I basically finished the manual today. There are a lot more features that I can learn in wordfast but I've learned all the useful ones that I needed to learn. Today they moved me to a different floor so I can translate for a team that does Visual Basic programming. I will be going through the code and translating it into English. This is going to be a lot of work.

Hello from Tokyo

Hi Everyone,

This is Matt, writing from Yotsuya in Tokyo. I am interning at Deutsche Bank this summer and I started last Monday. My first week went well and I have learned quite a bit--both things related to Deutsche Bank, and also about how to live in Japan. I think that this summer will provide a very rewarding experience, both professionally and culturally. I don't really know many people, so if you are in Tokyo and would like to do something on the weekends, let me know.

I hope everyone is having a great week and enjoyable time in their respective internships/teaching assignments.

Japanese food is tasty

I got to Komaki-shi, in Aichi ken near Nagoya last Wednesday. Jet lag ended about Saturday. Church was awesome on Sunday, I realized how much I missed church in Japan. I live in the dorm for Daifuku the company I am with and I just love the food. I look forward to every meal to see what interesting ways they can cook fish and the tsukemono and the salads and everything. I'm pretty tired now but I have been keeping an audio and written journal and I still need to get to that. I heard that Travis R. (ok to put name here? - you know who you are) is in Gifu. I went to a YSA activity in Gifu after church and ran into 2 missionaries that were in my mission. I was just as surprised as they were. It was there I was told that Travis is in Gifu. If you are contributing to this then I want to hear from you. I don't have a cell phone, does anyone? I have a skype account but haven't had the opportunity to call the USA. I had to use a public phone last week to contact a member to teach me where the church building is.

At work they have me translating manuals right now using a program called WordFast. The full time translators in the office use Trados and they have the interns use WordFast. I am getting the hang of it now after my 2nd full day of learning to use it but today it has been a major pain because of database issues. If anyone knows a lot about it then I have questions. Trados is about $13K from what I was told and Wordfast runs about $3K. My boss says if I can make the time to do then he wants to me make a Wikipedia like dictionary for our team with the words we use a lot in translation that we can access over the intranet. I really want to do and I could with the proper amount of time but it will take a lot of time. I might be able to get things started but it would be perfect for my major and I've already a lot of that on my own so I'm up for the challenge, I'm just not very familiar with Linux.

Well, evidently no one felt inclined to inform the group about what they are up to, so shall I begin?

I have not started teaching classes yet, mwa ha ha.
Those of you who have, what is the class like, and can you offer tips for what is working and what people struggle with? It might be good conversation, jus`saying.

In my case, I start teaching end of May in Yokohama. Could the other interns kindly point out where they are right now as well, so that we can get an idea of how much of Japan is claimed by BYU?

That might be good stuff to post, if you have no particular stories or creative ideas.
